AWP and building a platform. the end of this post to "Gloved" as published in DUST & FIRE, winner of the 2010 Carol Bly Award in Nonfiction.

I recently returned from the 2010 AWP (Association of Writers & Writing Programs) Annual Conference in Denver. If you've never participated in this incredible experience, I highly encourage any serious writer at any level to do so.

The conference was attended by about 9,000 people and there was something for everyone in the session offerings.

Topics ranged from business advice in "What's Your Platform? What Agents & Editors Are Looking For In Writers" with Christina Katz, Jane Friedman, Robin Mizell, David W. Sanders, and Sage Cohen, to "Truth or Trash? Women Writing Memoir" presented by five incredibly brave and inspiring women: Kerry Cohen, Sue William Silverman, Rachel Resnick, Melissa Febos, and Meri Nan-Ama Danquah.

Before the conference I'd been kicking around the idea of recording audio files to share my work. Seth Harwood, author of the Jack Palms Crime Series, has done this (and a whole lot more!). Robin Mizell emphasized that in order to make progress in getting your word out into the world, you've got to take one step at a time. A little bit every day or every week and you'll gradually build a platform.

So, thanks to Seth and Robin for giving me the nudge I needed to dive in, here's my debut into the blogosphere and my first audio file for your listening pleasure.
